preventing middle age weight gain, a tough job

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

LA times weighs in in this article here

“The recommendation is aimed at women who don’t want to diet but do want to avoid gaining weight. Some experts say to take it with a grain of salt.”

Sounds pretty good to us, but I’d agree with the experts, it does take a healthy dose of both diet and exercise if you’re serious about keeping it off.

That’s more I think what you see here

Some great shots from last year

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Rings add a great dynamic to any workout!

Knee tucks are a super targeted way to hit that lower ab pooch we all seem to get if we’re not careful.

Every workout ends with a nice long stretch to unload the tension from the work, and ease you into the next phase of your day.

Where would we be without yoga?  Endless pushups? uggh!

The Magic Formula

Friday, April 16th, 2010

These days everyone is looking for the quick fix or magic pill and the fitness world is not immune to this. Everyone wants to lose fat or gain muscle as quickly as possible but they don’t want to put in the necessary work. Some people are born with great genes that allows them to stay fit and healthy with minimal effort. The other 99% of the population must work hard and eat right to see the results they want. There is no magic formula or pill. You must be willing to put in the work, hard work, and be diligent with your diet  to achieve results. There are no excuses. . . only obstacles to over come :)

The Importance of Breathing during Workouts

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

By learning to control your breathing, you will improve far more in your workouts.  During exercise, the body’s demand for oxygen increases and our breathing volume or ventilation must also rise.  This requires numerous muscles surrounding the lungs to contract more forcefully and more rapidly to keep pace with the body’s substantial increase in metabolism.  By focusing on breathing through each exercise you help strengthen your diaphragm and intercostals which means you can slow your breathing rate down and even get more oxygen to your muscles.  Lastly, breathing can also help with improving your focus and concentration during workouts!

Pamela’s word on water

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I am a new family member of Fulcrum Fitness Fitcamp. My name is Pamela Orser and I am really excited to begin Fitcamp in Sellwood Park. This park has just been added to the list and it’s in my neighborhood!

Trust Your Tap

I made a New Year’s resolution about 6 years ago regarding water consumption. It frankly is one of the only resolutions I have kept and one of the very few I’ve ever made. I found this one remarkably easy. I play little games to remember to drink water. I have to because coffee, tea, and even beer sound so much better. I’ve been told, and believe, that the body’s reaction to dehydration often is the feeling of hunger or the feeling of fatigue, masking the real problem… the body is thirsty!

So, one thing I do is to have a strict rule of no food or beverage before a pint of water in the morning. So easy because you know I want that cup of coffee pronto. I use a pint glass, like the ones beer come in, and slug it down. I’m already half way to my liter before lunch rule! I have other tricks but would love to hear from anyone who has ideas about getting the life liquid into our bodies.
